Psyllium Husk (Plantago ovata)

Psyllium husk is a natural, high-fibre remedy known for its unique ability to help manage both diarrhoea and constipation, thanks to its rich mucilage content. When mixed with water, it swells into a gel-like substance that can absorb excess moisture or soften stool, depending on the body’s needs.

In horses, psyllium is especially valued for its role in helping prevent or manage sand colic by picking up sand and debris in the gut. It acts as a bulk laxative, demulcent (soothing to gut lining), and anti-diarrhoeal agent.

Important:

• Always ensure horses have constant access to fresh water when using psyllium.

• Do not use continuously—long-term use may reduce its effectiveness.

• Avoid use in impacted horses.

• Separate administration from oral medications by at least 2 hours.
